Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LPL) is the second-busiest hub of its kind in the north west and the UK’s 12th-most popular airport overall. Six airlines currently operate at LPL.

Liverpool Airport mainly offers flights to destinations in Europe, but flights also leave Liverpool for destinations in Africa, North America and the Middle East.

The airport holds a CAA Public Use Aerodrome Licence Number P735. This allows it to serve as a base for public flights and for aviation training. As one of Liverpool’s largest employers, LPL supports 12,000 jobs for residents of north west England and north Wales.

Location of Liverpool Airport

Liverpool Airport sits on the banks of the River Mersey. It is 7.5 miles (12 kilometres) south east of Liverpool city centre and its links to major road networks make it easy to access by car.

Its closeness to the M57, M56 and M62 motorways make it accessible from most locations in the north west and its proximity to the M1, M6 and A1 motorways mean that you can get there quickly and easily from anywhere in the country.

There are no direct trains to Liverpool Airport. However, there are many buses linking LPL to train stations in Liverpool and Manchester. There are also many buses and coaches that run to LPL.

Liverpool Airport hotel and parking

The Hampton Hilton is the only hotel within the grounds of Liverpool John Lennon Airport. It sits directly opposite the terminal and offers views of the runways. Thankfully, the Hampton also has triple-glazed windows to help protect your ears from the sounds of jet engines.

The hotel features an on-site restaurant, a bar and a ‘snack shop’ that stays open around the clock. The restaurant staff serves hot breakfasts from 4am every day.

You also get fast, free WiFi, complimentary access to the gym and a host of special offers at different times. If you’re at the Hilton for corporate reasons, there’s a 24-hour business centre as well as three meeting rooms to help you catch up with work or liaise with colleagues. As a guest, you can take advantage of the Hampton Hilton's secure on-site car park and there are park-and-fly packages available. Stays of four nights or more require use of the airport's long-stay car park.

The Premier Inn Liverpool John Lennon Airport is a quarter of a mile (0.4 kilometres) away from the grounds. It offers 'Sleep Park and Fly' packages for up to 15 nights, as well as WiFi, a restaurant, air-conditioned rooms and full disabled access.

The Crown Plaza is only a nine minutes’ drive from LPL via A561. It occupies the original Liverpool Airport terminal and retains the same charming art-deco façade. All rooms come with free WiFi, flat-screen TVs, en-suite bathrooms and desks. Room service is on hand for you 24 hours a day. The historic hotel features a bar and a business centre with 13 meeting rooms and also offers 'Park, Stay and Go' parking options for four, eight, 15 or more nights.

See the Yellow Submarine

The Yellow Submarine is very much in-keeping with the Beatles theme of the airport. The submarine statue was built by 80 apprentices from the Cammell Laird shipyard in 1984. It was originally part of a display at the International Garden Festival held in the year it was built.

The Yellow Submarine doesn’t do much other than sit in front of the LPL terminal, but it does add a bit of colour to what would otherwise be a pretty standard airport building. Despite this, the submarine made big news when it came to the airport in 2005. It’s also one of many Beatles sculptures in Liverpool that fans come from all over the world to see and have their photograph taken with for the memories.

Gain insight into the travel industry

There are three airport tours available at LPL. The Guided Landside Airport Tour starts with a 45-minute presentation and ends with a relaxed walk around the landside facilities.

There is also a Primary School Tour for children aged between 7 and 11. The two-hour tour begins by treating the kids to a five-minute film called 'Above Us Only Sky'. This introduces the airport and highlights its Lennon-related links.

The children then don hi-vis jackets and are each given a booklet, clipboard and pen to encourage interaction with their guide as they reach each stop on a tour of the grounds.

The Secondary School Tour is for pupils completing a GCSE in Applied Business Studies. However, anyone studying the travel industry may also gain insight from the tour. The GCSE-level tour is also two hours long and includes a presentation on the past, present and future of LPL, as well as a question and answer session. It ends with a walk around the landside facilities and the security control area.

See the work of world-famous artists

Tate Liverpool, in Liverpool’s Albert Dock, is where you’ll find the northern end of the National Collection of Modern Art. It hosts “a changing programme of special exhibitions” that offer you the chance to see works of art from all over the world. At different times, you’ll see masterpieces by everyone from Pablo Picasso to Andy Warhol to Claude Monet.

The gallery also holds a number of special events designed to enthral the whole family. The Tate Shop also lets you take home souvenirs from your visit. It takes 29 minutes to drive from LPL to Tate Liverpool via A561.

Go where The Beatles were born

There are many Beatles-related tours on offer in Liverpool, but The Beatles Fab Four Taxi Tour is one that gets the favourable reviews on sites like TripAdvisor. The taxi picks you from anywhere in Liverpool and takes you on a pre-planned tour or, indeed, one tailored to your tastes.

Take the tour to visit the childhood homes of all four Beatles. Paul McCartney’s home at 20 Forthlin Road and Lennon’s home at 251 Menlove Avenue are now owned by the National Trust. The Trust has restored both houses to the way they looked back in the 1950s and early 1960s. A visit here gives you a real sense of how things looked when the duo sat down to unwittingly change the world forever.

You’ll take in Penny Lane, Strawberry Field and St Peters Church (the site of the fete where John and Paul met in 1957). This tour can also take you to see Eleanor Rigby’s gravestone, the bus shelter in the middle of the roundabout and many other places that play a key role in Beatles folklore.

Discover a “tangled legacy of seduction and decay”

Speke Hall is one of the few remaining wood-framed Tudor manor houses in the country. Built (in its current form) between 1530 and 1598, it offers you the chance to see an otherwise long-lost piece of history. A visit here also lets you “discover the truth behind Liverpool’s most famous ghost story” and its “tangled legacy of seduction and decay”.

The manor house is open 363 days a year and offers time away from the bustling airport. Despite offering such a refreshing contrast, Speke Hall is just seven minutes’ drive from LPL (via Speke Hall Avenue). This makes it the perfect place to visit during a short layover at the airport.

Learn the history of the waterways

The National Waterways Museum has a lovely (and very fitting) waterside setting in Ellesmere Port, just 29 minutes’ drive from the airport via the M56. You’ll take a boat ride through the industrial landscape and watch the resident blacksmith at work. A look inside the traditional narrow boats offers a vivid picture of how people have lived and worked on the canals over the years.

The Williamson Tunnels are a labyrinth of underground passageways in the Edge Hill area of Liverpool. They were built on the orders of eccentric Liverpool tycoon, Joseph Williamson, over a 30-year period, starting in 1810.

Some believe that Williamson built the tunnels as a base for a sinister religious sect, but the man himself is quoted as saying that his main motive was to employ the poor as a gesture of charity without “the attendant stifled self-respect”.

The tunnels remained largely forgotten and in a state of disrepair until 1995 when excavations began, but some of the tunnels are now open to the public. Get close to nature

Spike Island is an area of open parkland. As the “birthplace of the British chemical industry”, it’s home to items of huge interest to archaeologists and industrial historians.

After being reclaimed as wetlands and woodlands between 1975 and 1982, Spike Island won a Green Flag award in recognition of its cleanliness. The lovely views, wildlife and kids’ play areas make it a great place to walk, relax and have fun.

If you’re driving, Spike Island is 14 minutes away from LPL via Speke Rd.

Useful tips

Remember your baby needs a boarding pass

If you’re travelling with a baby (or babies), it’s important to keep in mind that you need to check in the little one and not just yourself. While some airports allow infants between 14 days and two years old to travel on laps without a boarding pass, this isn’t the case at LPL.

Get to the airport early

Liverpool Airport has five car parks, all within easy walking distance of the LPL terminal, but it always pays to allow yourself extra time to get there. Liverpool is a major city, so traffic around it can be hectic and can result in delays – the same applies to the train lines. Give yourself at least two hours to get through traffic, check-in and security at LPL.

Avoid costly parking fines

Those who incur airport parking fines at LPL usually do so when picking up or dropping off. Bear in mind that there are ‘Red Route no stopping zones’ there, which are marked by clear red lines. It is an offence to stop in these zones and by doing so you may incur a heavy fine.

What disabled parking options are available?

Liverpool Airport disabled parking bays are available in the long-stay car park and short-stay multi-storey car parks. Blue Badge holders may leave their car in the Express Drop Off & Pick Up area for up to 40 minutes, completely free of charge.

Will my car be safe at Liverpool Airport?

All car parks at LPL are extremely secure. The high-level security includes state-of-the-art CCTV and electronic entry and exit points. The use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology means that you’re the only driver who can enter or leave the car park in your vehicle, as long as you keep hold of your keys.

Members of staff also patrol the grounds 24 hours a day. What’s more, all LPL car parks are certified under the Park Mark® Award scheme.

What time do shops and restaurants open?

Shops and restaurants start opening at 4am at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. Closing times vary, but most stay open until the final departure of the night.

Is there somewhere to smoke at Liverpool Airport?

Yes. An outside smoking area is available in the Departures Lounge. It’s equipped with an open shelter to shield you from the wind and rain, as well as wall-mounted ashtrays and a heater. Disabled passengers can reach the smoking area via Gate 44.

Electronic cigarettes are not allowed within the terminal building. Vapers must also use the dedicated smoking areas outside.
